I'm sure you know all about the box subscription websites out there. If not, here's the deal. There are tons of companies that let you sign up to get a box full of stuff based on your interests every month (or in some cases every few months). There are box subscription services for pretty much every interest out there. One of my favorites is Birchbox which sends you beauty and hair care products. At $10 a month, it's a pretty good deal. Each box comes with about four or five samples based on your personal preferences and characteristics. For instance, if you list yourself as having straight hair in your profile they won't send you hair care products for curly hair. If you hate glittery makeup they will send you matte products. The samples are all pretty good sizes and sometimes you'll actually get full-sized products. For any of you that enjoy trying new beauty products, Birchbox is a great deal. It's fun and it can help you save money too. And on top of that, they have a great…
The beauty world is about as cutthroat as an industry can be. From failed product launches, to anti-fans on social media, beauty brands and influencers have to be five steps ahead not only to avoid controversy but to remain in a positive light in the public eye. However, the breadth that this industry covers also allows for crazy amounts of exposure not just for large scale brands but also for bright up and coming brands (also known as “indi” brands) that 20 years ago never would have seen the light of day. These indi brands are often a bit more expensive - due to production costs - and often made in smaller batches so if something becomes a viral sensation, many who are on the late end of the story will lose out on getting their hands on the product. There is also a chance with these brands that what you will be getting is higher quality because they want to build up repeat customers so spending a bit more for qualities sake is something these brands are more likely to go the extra mile…
Dealing with skin care and beauty in general has been female dominated for pretty much all of time. Part of that goes back to the “olden days” or “good old days” as many a millennial has heard their older relatives refer to the past, where women ascribed to a certain image and lifestyle because that is what society told them they were supposed to do. Though this statement still rings true to this day, many women and men have begun pushing the boundaries and bringing what was once a taboo or alternative thought into the mainstream and making it the new norm. It always seems that in media that beauty, hair and skin products are marketed specifically for women - each product with a specific use - while men are left with one cream you can use to wash and condition your hair, wash your body, and as a face wash/shaving cream. This one and done mentality of male grooming has always been made fun of in the media because men are traditionally “lower maintenance” than women. But the fact of the…
Whether you were first entranced by the glowing, flawless skin of an Asian-American celebrity here in the States; or more recently with the introduction of K-Pop and the influx of Korean culture into our media culture, one of the first things many people think of when they first hear Korean culture is beauty. Now there is no shortage of beauty, skin, hair and other product groups based here in the U.S., so why has K-Beauty sweeped in and become the next big thing? When you look at the technology, the innovations in recent years, how effective these products actually are, and - quite frankly - the affordability factor, it is no wonder that K-Beauty has become a world leader in the industry. Innovation & Technology Now when we are looking at the technology and innovations of the K-Beauty industry, it is important to understand why all of these innovations happened in such a seemingly short amount of time. Korean women on average spend over twice as much on beauty and skincare as women in…
With the proliferation of social media and internet branding, there is no shortage of celebrity endorsed and curated brands these days. And there are even the occasional celebrity run company - but those cases are usually where the celebrity or influencer is the figurehead and someone else actually runs in with the celebrity having very little involvement. However, one celebrity juggernaut is not only showing influencers how it’s done, but showing the beauty industry what should have been already happening. Started in 2017 after nearly 2 years of testing and product creation - as stated by the multitalented artist and influencer - Rihanna came into the makeup game strong. With a foundation range like no one has ever seen and a goal to make makeup for all, not just makeup for some, Rihanna is single handedly holding prestige, drugstore, and every other category of brands accountable to not just serve some, but serve all. Releasing her expansive line on the heels of the Kardashian-Jenner…
A couple of years ago when I worked at Cumberland Falls State Park, a young boy and his dad came to a program I was hosting - a craft program that involved making picture frames out of sticks, leaves, pinecones, and other materials found on the forest floor
The three of us went on a hike and the boy picked out all the materials he needed. As he was building his frame he picked up a pinecone that was quite battered and broken. Next to it laid a whole pinecone. It was, for all intents and purposes, perfect. So, I picked that one up and asked the boy if he would rather use the perfect pinecone.
He looked up at me and said very matter-of-factually, “No, I like the broken ones.”
Tears instantly welled up in my eyes.
A lifetime's worth of wisdom was spoken from the mouth of a child. A Love/Hate Relationship
We do not always see our bodies for the miracles they truly are. In fact, many of us treat our bodies as something separate, something apart from us, something we have to fight against.…
