I'm sure you know all about the box subscription websites out there. If not, here's the deal. There are tons of companies that let you sign up to get a box full of stuff based on your interests every month (or in some cases every few months). There are box subscription services for pretty much every interest out there. One of my favorites is Birchbox which sends you beauty and hair care products. At $10 a month, it's a pretty good deal. Each box comes with about four or five samples based on your personal preferences and characteristics. For instance, if you list yourself as having straight hair in your profile they won't send you hair care products for curly hair. If you hate glittery makeup they will send you matte products. The samples are all pretty good sizes and sometimes you'll actually get full-sized products. For any of you that enjoy trying new beauty products, Birchbox is a great deal. It's fun and it can help you save money too. And on top of that, they have a great…
I've been watching a new show on Netflix called Altered Carbon. It's based on a book by Richard K. Morgan and takes place in a futuristic society where rich people can live for hundreds of years (or possibly forever). A new technology has allowed people to be implanted with a disk called a "stack" in the back of their neck which stores their personality and memories. When your body dies, as long as your stack is still intact, it can be put into another body. When someone is put in prison, their stack is removed and put in storage and their body is given to someone else. Rich people can afford the best bodies and some can even have clones of themselves made. But if your stack is destroyed there is no coming back. Then you're really gone forever. The main character, Takeshi Kovacs, was something called an envoy. Envoys have incredible instincts and fighting skills. They were all killed off except for him. He was arrested and put in prison until 250 years later when a rich man named…
A few years ago I was in the market for a new digital camera and I decided to buy a Canon PowerShot SX130 IS from Amazon. I wouldn't call myself a digital camera expert or anything, but I do photography as a hobby and I even make a little bit of money from it occasionally by selling stock photos. So I thought I'd provide a review of this camera. I'm going to start off by mentioning some facts and stats about it. It has a 12x optical zoom and it's a 12.1-megapixel camera. According to the user manual, you can take up to 130 photos if you're using alkaline batteries and up to 370 when using NiMH batteries. Based on my experience this is definitely true. There isn't much battery life at all when using alkaline batteries so I don't recommend even trying. But if you use NiMH batteries you shouldn't have any issues. If you use a 4 GB memory card with this camera you'll be able to hold up to 1,231 photos and a 16 GB card will store 4,042 photos. Unfortunately, this isn't the best camera for…
I've been trying to lose weight and get in shape recently. But I have always felt like exercise was boring. So I've been on the lookout for anything that can make working out more interesting or fun. So I thought I'd try out the Gixo Fitness App. What is it? It's an app that has live workout classes throughout the day. These are all led by a trainer and you can sign up for one as late as a few minutes before a class starts. I think that's wonderful because many of us are busy and it can be hard to fit working out into our schedules. But this way, you don't have to worry about it so much. If you happen to find that you have some extra time on your hands, you can fit in a class. You have to decide if you want to activate your phone's camera or not so the trainer can see you. It helps a lot if they can see you so they can give you tips on how you're doing. And if you do decide to use the camera, the other people in the class won't be able to see you, so you don't have to worry about that. But…
Hello Fresh is one of many meal box kits you can subscribe to. But is it worth it? My roommate and I decided to try it out the other day and here are my thoughts. The pros of using Hello Fresh They have different plans so you should be able to find something to suit your family's needs. In my case, I just wanted a few meals to share with my roommate so we went with their 2 meals for 2 people a week plan. We both have really different tastes when it comes to food and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find any meals that we would both like, but that wasn't the case. Choosing your meals is really easy too. And there isn't a meal you like that week, or if you just don't want a meal to be delivered (for instance, if you're not going to be home) you can just log into the website and tell them to skip that week. They also do a great job at keeping your food ingredients cold so if you aren't home when the box comes, you don't have to worry about the food going bad. The box is insulated and has…
This will come as a shock coming from me, seeing as how I'm a technology booster from way back, but sometimes we need to take our eyes off the glowing screens for a minute. Yes, it's tempting to stay glued to phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops - I have to for work, anyway - but the eyes and brain could use a rest from 24/7 electronic stimulation. And that's when it's time for non-digital amusements. I've already blogged about Magic: The Gathering here and Legos here, so now this is a round-up of simple, idle amusements for the office desktop. The ideal office desk toy is a stress-relief activity that's not too involving. It's not meant to be a diversion for concentrated hours, just something to fiddle with while you make up your mind whether to fulfill the spreadsheet reformatting request or just tell Records to get stuffed. Or while you solve your app's library conflict in the back of your mind. Or ruminate on whether to continue productivity for the day with another cup of Joe or…
