Quip Toothbrush Review

09/15/2018 Modified 03/30/2020

It seems like if there is a product out there that everyone needs, there is a subscription service that will send it right to your door. From food to razors, having subscriptions has taken on a whole new meaning to mean so much more than just magazines and newspapers. Being a college student, I have tried many a subscription service. From beauty boxes, food delivery services, or even my Amazon Student Account that seems to always remain. However, there is one service that I think is totally worth it and that is for something that may seem a bit odd; and that is Quip.

What is Quip?

“Quip was founded to prove that good design would have a bigger impact on oral health than quick fix gimmicks.”

This electric toothbrushes journey began at a family dentistry practice in New York, and a suggestion to use “the cheapest electric brush available” to fight the major and very common problem of brushing too hard.

In terms of subscription costs, you have a range of options from enough for 1 person, to 2 to a whole family starting from 40 dollars starter kit to 150 (year prepay for the family set). Check on their website for a full breakdown of the deals.

Specs of Quip

The design is relatively simplistic, which is one of the reasons I believe it works so well. Starting at the top with its soft bristle brush head, its 1200+ soft, round-tipped DuPont nylon bristles inserted into 34 tufts give each tooth a gentle cleaning that is both thorough but soft enough for even the most sensitive teeth. And what’s great is every three months you are sent a replacement head in the mail with no shipping costs and no commitments. You are free to cancel, extend, or change your plan as your life ebbs and flows.

The electric motor is something else as well. Vibrating at 15,000 RPM, you will get some of the most powerful cleaning action possible. The motor pulses every 30 seconds to help you evenly clean your teeth and the 2-minute double pulse lets you know when to stop. And don’t ever worry about changing the battery, because with each replacement brush head you will receive a new AAA battery.

The handle is made from precision CNC’d aluminum that has been bead blasted by robots and anodized to last through a lifetime of brushing. It comes in a variety of colors silver metal, slate metal, copper metal, gold metal, green plastic (more teal in my opinion), blue plastic, and the current promotion in collaboration with (product)RED (RED) metal. Finally the Mount-able travel cap. Whether you want to mount it right above your sink or use it to keep bacteria and other grim off your toothbrush as you travel, this multipurpose holder is perfect for any lifestyle.

Though Quip does also offer a subscription package with toothpaste refills as well, this is the only aspect of this service I would maybe warn against. Unless this makes everything more convenient for you, it works the same and is priced the same as many drugstore tubes of toothpaste so it is really up to you whether you want to add this on or not.

My Comparison

Before I started on my Quip journey, I was a loyal Sonicare user. But after the years went on, the costs for replacement brush heads were beginning to stack up. Each replacement was costing me more and more, and because the only brush heads that would work with my toothbrush were specialized heads that every time I went to purchase more to replace kept getting more expensive. Then when I was on my social media one day I came across an ad for this company and after doing all of my budgeting, I couldn’t believe how much I would be saving. With a $45 fee for the starter kit and $5 every 3 months for replacement brush heads, I would be saving between $50-60 every year (and when you are a college student those savings add up quick).

The use of the toothbrush is great too. It’s lightweight and no bigger than regular manual toothbrushes, so it was much nicer to hold than my oversized sonicare brush.

Final Review

This was one of the best purchases I have made in recent years, but I realize that it is not for everyone, so before you go out and subscribe, do what I did. Do the math, see if it’s worth it to make the switch. If you do, I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
